Catholicism II
Concerning Idols, Icons, and Statues:
The Catechism requires all Catholics to “venerate” statues, or images of Christ, Mary and others:
“Sacred images in our churches and homes are intended to awaken and nourish our faith in the mystery of Christ. Through the icon of Christ and his works of salvation, it is he whom we adore. Through sacred salvation, it is he whom we adore. Through sacred images of the holy Mother of God, of the angels and of the saints, we venerate the persons represented.” Pg. 307, #1192
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: [5] Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Exodus 20:4-5
Thou shalt have none other gods before me. Deut. 5:7
“Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves… Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female…” Deuteronomy 4:15-16
-To designate an image as ‘venerable’ and ‘holy’ is blasphemy. The word ‘venerable’ is derived from the Latin word venerare meaning ‘to worship’.
Concerning the host, or wafer:
The Catechism teaches: “By the same charity that it enkindles in us, the Eucharist preserves us from future mortal sins.” Pg. 352, #1395
Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto. [16] He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire: [17] And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god. Isaiah 44:15-17
